This gentle snaffle is jointed and similar in style to the loose ring snaffle however contains egg-shaped rings on either side; this prevents the mouth piece from rotation, giving a more fixed feeling. Pinching of the corners of the horse’s mouth is also prevented. Pressure with this bit is applied to the bars of the horse’s mouth with the nutcracker effect causing pressure on the roof of the horse’s mouth when the reins are applied.
Eggbutt bits are thicker towards the lips than the middle of the tongue, making them milder than normal D-Ring bits. These bits are commonly used in horses with sensitive mouths and encourages lightness on the forehand. A more direct rein aid is experienced than with the loose ring varieties.
