The Three Ring Portuguese Snaffle bit has a single joint attached to a large loose ring [with one small ring attached to the top and two small rings attached to the bottom of the large loose ring]. As a result of the joint, this bit may result in the nutcracker effect. When rein action is applied, the bit slides upwards and rotates in the horse’s mouth. The larger the rings, the more severe the Portuguese snaffle.
