A variation of this bit is the lozenge bit which even through looks similar to the French link, puts more pressure on the tongue due to the link being straighter thus applying more pressure to the tongue.

A French link snaffle contains loose rings on either side of the mouthpiece with two joints in the middle section of the bit. The middle joined piece is a flat, peanut shaped link making it suitable for horses with large tongues or narrow mouths. The double joint reduces the nutcracker action encouraging relaxation of the horse. This bit has been found to be milder than single jointed bits or mullen mouth bits.
